Each County played seven singles Match Play off scratch against each other. One point scored for a win, half a point for a halved match and zero
points for a loss. No individual match continues past the 18th hole. The players not playing a singles match play a Foursomes. Eight players named in the squad played in a Stableford Foursomes, played over 18 holes off handicap. Pairings can be any combination of handicap.
A squad of 10 girls, 3 making their debut, travelled to North London’s Crews Hill in Middlesex to compete in the annual Southern region Junior County Match Week on Sunday 11th August.
The weather was hot and humid on the Sunday practice day and got even hotter on Monday 12th when we played our first singles match against Kent in the morning and the afternoon Foursomes Stableford. But the girls got on with it, ably supported by the team of adults and parents who ensured they stayed hydrated. We even resorted to using towels dipped in ice cold water to cool them down!
The girls worked together brilliantly as a team which was lovely to see. In particular their support and encouragement of those girls playing their first ever matches at Match Week was heart warming.
Team Captain: Bea Cheverton won three matches and the inaugural Player of the Week Trophy. Amelia Roberts won two of her matches, Georgia Young won one of hers and Darci Lewis-Bradbury won one match and halved another. Elena Teubler managed to half a very close match on the 18th against Kent and came very close to repeating the same result on the 18th against Hampshire, eventually losing by 1. Elena was awarded the inaugural Spirit of Team Sussex Trophy as Rob and I judged her tenacity, enthusiasm and commitment embodied the very essence of Team Sussex spirit. Our final match against Middlesex was very, very close but we just missed out on a win.
Final results were:-
Sussex 2 : Kent 5
Hampshire 5 : Sussex 2
Sussex 1 : Surrey 6
Sussex 3 : Middlesex 4
After a final day of very close matches, Hampshire were crowned winners with Surrey taking the runners-up spot.
The team was captained by Bea Cheverton who was playing in her last Match Week as a junior together with Sam Worsey who similarly leaves the Junior squad this year. We thank and wish them both well for the future. And we look forward to watching them represent Sussex as adults going forward.
