Scratch Knockout Foursomes - Competition Report

Scratch Knockout Foursomes - Report

The Scratch Foursomes for 2024 finally got underway 5 months after originally planned. A huge thank you must go to Cooden Beach for fitting this fixture into their calendar and allowing us to use their course over the weekend.

For once we were blessed with some lovely sunshine and very little wind providing ideal conditions for the tournament. Sadly because of the change of date a number of clubs had to withdraw due to non availability and some last minute injuries. County policy is that once a draw is made it is adhered to but it did provide some very strange matches with some clubs fortunate to get byes through to the next round whilst 6 clubs had to battle their way through the first round on Friday afternoon. West Sussex, Copthorne and Pyecombe were all victorious making it through to round 2 on Saturday morning.

Saturday provided another glorious sunny day as 10 teams went into battle.  Pyecombe were early winners in their match thus ensuring maximum recovery time before their afternoon match. Several matches went to the 18th although no one had to venture down the 1st again.

The afternoon matches saw Bognor Blue team take on The Dyke Blue, Pyecombe took on Willingdon and Worthing Yellow had to play Worthing Blue ensuring at least one Worthing team reached the finals. Royal Ashdown were in the fortunate position of having another bye whilst the earlier byes fed through the system.

In the first match of the day Dyke Blue were victorious against Bognor Blue, Pyecombe beat Willingdon on the 15th hole and Worthing Blue were the winners in the Worthing duel.

The line up for Sundays matches were:

Semi finals

  • Dyke Blue vs Royal Ashdown Forest
  • Pyecombe vs Worthing Blue

Sunday Report
The sun was shining and there was only a slight breeze as the competitors prepared to tee off in the semi finals of the Scratch Foursomes competition.

First off in the morning were the Dyke represented by Holly Crompton & Maddy Harris against Royal Ashdown Forest represented by Katherine Russell & Tracy Poulsom. This was closely followed by the second match Pyecombe represented by Emma Carberry & Aileen Greenfield against a Worthing Blue team represented by Paula Carver & Amy Davey.

In both matches one team got off to a commanding lead but both opponents fought back with Royal Ashdown Forest winning on the 17th Green. Behind them the match was All Square going into the 18th and this time the Worthing Blue team were victorious.

For the afternoon final, the wind had picked up making the conditions a little more tricky for all players. By the 7th hole there was nothing to separate the two teams with the score at All Square. On the 8th hole Worthing went one up and after that never relinquished their lead, finally winning on the 15th hole.

Congratulations to Worthing Blue team.
Well done to all teams who participated and our thanks again to Cooden Beach for excellent hosting and supporting the SCLGA.
