County Championship Friday 31 May - 2 June 2024,
Willingdon Golf Club (Yellow Tees)
A fabulous morning for the final day of the Championship, the semi-finals in the morning and finals in the afternoon. The sun was shining, and the course was looking spectacular yet again. Our thanks and appreciation to Willingdon who were excellent hosts. Jayne Wilding the General Manager could not have done more for us. Willingdon Lady Captain Jane Jones, the Pro shop team and Jayne Wilding’s catering team and greens staff were all superb in looking after us. We must add our thanks to the team of referees that we had over the weekend, Jo Maddams, Kathy Morris, Ann Carnegie, Chris Handson, Stephen Lang, and Steve Williamson.
The morning commenced with the Plate Semi-final matches which saw Georgia Young play some excellent golf and succeed in reaching the final of the plate by beating Rebecca Dawson, followed by Katie Field who secured her win against Suzanne Taylor. The Championship Semi-finals followed and were extremely close, nail-biting matches. Both matches went to the 19th hole where the winners both won their matches with birdies. First in was Chloe who beat Holly Crompton followed by Emma Carberry beating Sasha Gardiner.
A quick turnaround and the Plate Finalists teed off for their final match followed by the Championship Final.
Players from the morning stayed on to follow the matches and joined the spectators, a lot of whom played Friday and Saturday. The camaraderie and support between players as always has been excellent. The matches were close – all playing their best golf, knowing too that the
County Captain Pat Codd and Jane Covey (Player Development Lead), watching from the side-lines, were making their selection that evening for the Sussex team for County Match Week. The players were coming off the course – so complimentary of each other, it was hard to decipher the winners.
A worthy winner, our Sussex Ladies Champion for 2024 is Emma Carberry.
The Runner-up to Champion & winner of Fleming Salver: Chloe Briance
.
The Winner of the Plate: Katie Field
The Plate Runner-up & winner of the Jackson Trophy: Georgia Young
.
Semi-finalists: Championship (Holly Crompton & Sasha Gardiner)
.
Semi-finalists: Plate (Rebecca Dawson & Suzanne Taylor)
Also it must be mentioned that two of the players from Friday afternoon achieved the course record from the ladies yellow tees, both scoring a gross 79 – Maddy Harris and Emma Carberry. Willingdon have kept these cards to display with other course records.
It’s been a fabulous few days. It’s a tough competition, with the finalists playing 108 holes of golf in 3 days. This will have stood the County Match Week Squad in good stead for County Match Week. This year it is being held in Hampshire from 7th – 10th July.
Supporters welcome – wearing their yellow and blue.
Day 2 of the Championship weekend brings the start of the nail-biting knockout rounds. The winners from this mornings knockouts commenced the quarter finals after a lunch break playing for the Championship Trophy, those not so fortunate played on for the Championship Plate. 72 holes in two days with another 36 holes for those that get through to the finals– it’s a tough competition.
The afternoon weather was kinder with the sun coming out, and the wind not quite so tough. We had caddies on bags this year, great camaraderie with Willingdon members offering to caddy and some not qualifying yesterday coming back to caddy for pals today. Last years finalists met each other in the quarter finals – Chloe Briance and Maddy Harris – it was always going to be tough and took an extra hole to put Chloe through to the semi-finals tomorrow.
Going through to the Plate semi-finals tomorrow are Rebecca Dawson of Piltdown, Georgia Young of Cowdray Park – our youngest semi-finalist at just 15, Katie Field of Bognor Regis, and Suzanne Taylor also from Bognor Regis.
The Championship semi-finalists are Holly Crompton from Dyke, Chloe Briance both from Bognor Regis, Emma Carberry from Pyecombe and Sasha Gardiner from Chartham Park.
Commiserations to the competitors that went home tonight, and good luck to all winning competitors of today in their semi-finals and finals tomorrow. Full results from this mornings Match Play are
here.

The 2024 Championship & Langridge Salver commenced with a full field and a reserve list for a second year running.
The course was absolutely stunning, beautifully presented by the Course manager and his team. A strong North wind was gusting, and rain showers meant the course played long, which was challenging as we had decided for the first year to use Willingdon’s yellow tees for our Championship. We expected beautiful warm sunshine, but for a second year running the players experienced tough playing conditions with the strong winds, with the extra challenge of the longer course. It’s a definite rethink for next year – we will definitely put the players back on to the red tees in case of a hat trick weather wise. This wind made play challenging, However, throughout the day we saw 45 birdies and 1 eagle. The eagle of the day came from Katherine Russell from Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club, and the player with the most birdies – 6 in total, 4 in the afternoon, was Clarissa Bushell from West Sussex Golf Club.
Dyke was the winning club of the Sussex Scratch Trophy – the best 3 scores from a club, with Holly Crompton, Maddie Harris, and Alison Vans Agnew representing their club.
This year Di Langridge came along to watch our players. It was lovely to welcome her back to present her Salver. The Langridge Salver was won by Paula Carver of Worthing, with a gross 164, with Aileen Greenfield of Pyecombe Golf Club as runner up. Holly Crompton from Dyke Golf Club was a worthy winner of the Scratch Trophy with a Gross 161, but also shared the Nett Trophy with Sara Whittaker from Willingdon with a Nett 151. They will have to have the trophy for 6 months each!
Sasha Gardiner from Chartham Park took home the runners up Scratch prize with a Gross 163, with Emma Bullock of Worthing taking the Nett Runners Up prize with a Nett 153.
The top 16 qualifying ladies that are available to play on Saturday for another day of 36 holes. Saturday morning is the knockout round before the players proceed to play for the Championship Trophy or the Championship Plate. Still playing off those tricky yellow tees, however the weather definitely looks kinder to the players. The suntan lotion might make an appearance. We can only hope.
